My son's diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis forced me to confront the enigma of a benign all-powerful being randomly inflicting an innocent child, precipitating a spiritual crisis. However, the appeal to Jizo reflects my unwillingness at the time to accept the fact of a random, impersonal universe.
